Elder Oaks Addresses Seminary Students about Old Testament Course

  • 18 August 2011

Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles addresses seminary students in a video series about the Old Testament.

"It is a privilege to study the Old Testament and to learn the word of God under the direction of gifted teachers."—Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles recently prepared a series of online messages about the Old Testament course of study for seminary teachers and students.

Seminary teachers are encouraged to use the 10 short video messages to supplement their teaching of the Old Testament during the 2011–12 school year.

All other Church members can see the welcome video on the seminary website. The other videos will be available only to seminary teachers who are employed by the Church Educational System as well as those called by local priesthood leaders.

The videos range in length from 1 1/2 minutes to 12 1/2 minutes and cover topics such as making seminary meaningful, marking scriptures, and understanding Isaiah.

“A lot of … teachers have said that they love the presence of an Apostle in their classroom,” said Andrew Horton, manager of visual curriculum for Seminaries and Institutes of Religion. “[They said] it made it very personal to have an Apostle speaking to the students about their course of study.”

Several of the messages are presented as conversations between actual early-morning seminary students and Elder Oaks. In one message, Elder Oaks shows students the way he marks his scriptures.

“The messages are very open; there’s a lot of give and take and dialogue,” Seminary and Institute Visual Curriculum designer Justin Lether said. “It’s very warm and inviting.”

The messages are currently available in English and will soon be available in Cantonese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.
