Evidence that he likely traveled to Utah in 1850 is based on his appearing on a list of people who traveled to Iron County in December 1850. In May 1851 he left Iron County to return north. He likely left Iowa in 1850 to see if he could find an opportunity to work in Utah, leaving his children in the care of their step–mother and his wife, Elizabeth.
