You Are Enhancing Nursing Education

It is a pleasure for me to be at Brigham Young University! I completed my doctorate here and am delighted to be back. Throughout my career in nursing education, I have been impressed with the faculty and students of this campus. College of Nursing faculty members are dedicated to nursing and teaching, and the students are absolutely outstanding. As dean, I have pledged to work with the faculty in bringing students the best nursing education possible.

Donations from alumni and friends of the college improve the education of nurses at BYU. You help us provide students with scholarships and funds that promote mentored learning. Scholarships are vital because nursing is a full-time program—outside of class students are required to do extensive clinical work, and very few graduate without some financial assistance.

Mentored-students learning, in my view, has put BYU on the map in terms of intellectually preparing students for the real world. Nursing research is sophisticated work for undergraduates, but those who are mentored are not just learning from books, they’re crafting new knowledge. BYU College of Nursing prepares better nurses because of mentoring.

I am grateful for the major support of BYU President’s Leadership Council members John and Stephanie Sorensen and the long-term principal support of Intermountain Healthcare. These contributions have provided for staff and equipment in the Nursing Learning Center, a hands-on lab that provides cutting-edge teaching and learning in the college.

TEACHING THE HEALER'S ART
I have been on the job since July and have seen that the love of the Lord is evident in teaching and learning at BYU. Because nursing is so closely tied to Christlike compassion, it is wonderful to openly incorporate faith in what we teach and how we teach it. I’m excited to get up in the morning and come to work; I have much to learn and am looking forward with anticipation.

Thank you for helping make this a place where faculty and students are excited to be. Thank you for enhancing their educational experience—you are blessing hundreds of students and through them countless patients and families.
