Three Stories, Three Sets of Blessings

It was 6:45 p.m. on August 17, 2007, when a devastating 7.9 earthquake hit the coastal towns south of Lima, Peru. Hope crumbled as adobe homes tumbled to the ground. Over 500 people lost their lives, five of them members of the Church.

The following are stories of three families who feel that miracles played a part in sparing their lives during that catastrophe. These are stories about three families in San Clemente and La Villa, Peru, who experienced sacrifice, faith, courage, love, and indeed, many miracles.

Ground Broken for Brazil’s Sixth Temple

An artist’s rendering of the new Manaus, Brazil, temple. Leaders from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints broke ground on Friday at the site of what will be the faith’s sixth temple in the country. The ceremony was attended by community leaders, media representatives and Church members.

Elder Oaks warns grads against 'voluntary slavery'

Speakers at BYU-H Graduation. Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles admonished the 235 new BYU-Hawaii graduate candidates gathered in front of faculty, family and friends in the Cannon Activities Center this morning, "Don't be a slave."

Perseverance and smarts pave the way for accounting student

Dan Leslie, a graduate of the Marriott School's master of accountancy program. Sometimes it takes more than following the beaten path to attain success-often it takes a hop, skip, or jump to surmount an obstacle.

Daniel Leslie says all of the obstacles he has overcome have brought him closer to his aspirations. "I can see where I want to be, and anything I accomplish is really just a step toward my end goal. It wouldn't really matter if I was one step further back or one step further ahead; it's where I'm going that's important."

Education helps design student's future

Chelsea Goates, recent graduate of LDS Business College. Chelsea Goates has wanted to be an interior designer for as long as she can remember. But the commitment required to become an interior designer does not pave an easy path to success. "LDS Business College helped me achieve my dream," said Chelsea, "but it has not been easy. To do well in this program takes a passion for design and a lot of hard work."
