Facts About the Boston Massachusetts Temple

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

What: The Boston Massachusetts Temple is the 100th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The temple has approximately 70,000 square feet of floor space and includes a Celestial Room, four endowment rooms seating 50 people in each room, four sealing rooms, and a baptistry. The exterior is Olympic white granite from Italy. Once legal issues are resolved, plans call for the temple's spire to be topped with a replica of the Angel Moroni (Mo-RONE-eye) statue by renowned Boston-area sculptor Cyrus Dallin.
Where: The temple is located north of Boston. The mailing address is 86 Frontage Rd., Belmont, MA. 02478.
Why: The temple is considered a "House of the Lord" where the Savior's teachings are reaffirmed through marriage, baptism, and other sacred ordinances focusing on the eternal potential of family relationships.
When:

Plans for the temple were announced September 30, 1995 by the First Presidency of the Church. Groundbreaking services were held June 13, 1997.

A public open house will be held August 29 to September 5, 2000, and then September 9 through September 23, excluding Sunday, September 3 and 10. There will be a half day tour on Sunday, September 17. Monday tours will conclude at 5:45 p.m. The temple will be formally dedicated Sunday, October 1, 2000.

Who: The temple will serve approximately 69,000 Latter-day Saints in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, parts of New York and Rhode Island.
