The Scriptures and the Restoration

Elder L. Tom Perry

"I find myself continuing to feel the inspiration of the last general conference. I felt the power of the messages, especially the doctrinal presentations on the Restoration of the gospel.

"Fortunately we can continue to study these messages. Sessions are replayed on television and over the Internet, and the printed text is available in the Church magazines in a remarkably short period of time. Just one month after the final session we have the conference edition of the Ensign and the Liahona ready for distribution. That's a marvelous accomplishment. It is now possible to study these messages by topic for use in our personal study and family home evening and as source material for our gospel teaching assignments to emphasize the words of the prophets.

"As I have reviewed the sermons, I have been impressed with the doctrinal foundation taught. How the Lord has blessed us with additional truths reinforced by the holy scriptures in our lives!"

—Elder L. Tom Perry, "The Scriptures and the Restoration," CES Fireside for Young Adults, Nov. 2, 2003.

Likening the teachings of modern prophets to us:

  1. Make a list of some of the ways gospel teachers can study—and use in lessons—the powerful messages delivered at general conference by prophets, seers, and revelators.

  2. Elder Perry suggested that one way for gospel teachers to study the gospel is by topic. One way to do this would be to use the Topical Guide in the scriptures. Another way would be to keep a file of folders marked with topics taken from basic doctrines and core principles. Both methods may assist teachers "to study these messages by topic for use in [their] personal study and family home evening and as source material for [their] gospel teaching assignments."

  3. Elder Perry suggested that gospel teachers would do well "to emphasize the words of the prophets" in their gospel teaching assignments. The general conference edition of the Ensign contains both an alphabetized speaker list and a topical index of each conference talk. For example, the Ensign of November 2004 contained an index of 67 separate topics discussed at the conference, beginning with "activation" and ending with "youth." Examples of other topics covered were faith, repentance, covenants, prayer, Holy Ghost, Book of Mormon, Jesus Christ, restoration, scripture study, testimony, women, youth, and Heavenly Father.
