A Testimony of the Book of Mormon

NelsonRM_05_strd

"Each individual who prayerfully studies the Book of Mormon can also receive a testimony of its divinity (see Moroni 10:4–5). In addition, this book can help with personal problems in a very real way. Do you want to get rid of a bad habit? Do you want to improve relationships in your family? Do you want to increase your spiritual capacity? Read the Book of Mormon! It will bring you closer to the Lord and His loving power (the Prophet Joseph Smith declared that 'a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book' [History of the Church, 4:461]). He who fed a multitude with five loaves and two fishes—He who helped the blind to see and the lame to walk—can also bless you! He has promised that those who live by the precepts of this book 'shall receive a crown of eternal life' (D&C 20:14). The Book of Mormon is true! I so testify in the name of Jesus Christ, amen."

—Elder Russell M. Nelson, "A Testimony of the Book of Mormon," Ensign, Nov. 1999, 71.

Likening the teachings of modern prophets and apostles to us:

  1. What did the Prophet Joseph Smith declare about the Book of Mormon? (see History of the Church, 4:461).

  2. Elder Nelson suggests that the Book of Mormon can provide answers and solutions to a host of personal problems. What are some of these? Note Elder Nelson's skill in asking the following questions to create interest in his topic: "Do you want to get rid of a bad habit? Do you want to improve relationships in your family? Do you want to increase your spiritual capacity? Read the Book of Mormon!"

  3. To learn more about how Jesus Christ, the Master Teacher, used questions to encourage people to ponder and apply the principles He taught, see Matthew 16:13–15, Luke 7:41–42, 3 Nephi 27:27, and "Teaching with Questions," in Teaching, No Greater Call, 68–70.
