Have You Ever Had a Really Great Teacher?

OaksDH_04_ftr

"A national author wrote a book about his greatest teacher. At the heart of this college teacher's powerful impact on his student was the student's conviction that this teacher really cared for him and wanted him to learn and do what would help him find happiness. The author concluded his tribute with this question: 'Have you ever really had a teacher? One who saw you as a raw but precious thing, a jewel that, with wisdom, could be polished to a proud shine? If you are lucky enough to find your way to such teachers, you will always find your way back.' "

—Elder Dallin H. Oaks, "Gospel Teaching, " Ensign, Nov. 1999, 78.

Likening the teachings of modern prophets and apostles to us:

  1. Make a list of the teacher or teachers who have had the greatest influence on your life.

  2. Under the name of each teacher, list the qualities of character that made these teachers outstanding or memorable (for example, love, faith, patience, kindness, honesty, example).

  3. Next, make a list of specific examples, evidenced both in or outside the classroom, of how these teachers exhibited these memorable qualities.

  4. What can you do as a teacher to exemplify one or more of these teaching qualities that made the teachers on your list so unforgettable?
