A Teacher Come from God

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland speaks about great teachers:

"When Nicodemus came to Jesus early in the Savior's ministry, he spoke for all of us when he said, 'Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God.'

"Christ was, of course, much more than a teacher. He was the very Son of God, the Holy One of the eternal gospel plan, the Savior and Redeemer of the world.

"But Nicodemus was starting about the way you and I started, the way any child or young student or new convert begins, by recognizing and responding to a thrilling teacher who touches the innermost feelings of our heart."

—Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, "A Teacher Come from God," Ensign, May 1998, 25–26.

Likening the teachings of modern prophets and apostles to us:

  1. Read the story of Nicodemus found in John 3:1-12. Who was Nicodemus? Why did Nicodemus come to Jesus by night? How did Jesus treat him?

  2. Do you have a "Nicodemus" in your class who may be touched by the gospel message, but is embarrassed by his connection with the Church or the fact that he may not be living all the gospel standards?

  3. How can you be the thrilling teacher who touches the innermost feelings of his or her heart?
