Mutual Opening Exercises

Young women class

Begin Mutual by inviting the Spirit. Involve youth in a short opening meeting (often called "opening exercises").

Opening exercises should include a prayer and a hymn. Opening exercises may also include:

  • A talk about the annual Mutual theme.
  • Testimonies about the standards in For the Strength of Youth.
  • Introduction of friends and visitors.
  • Opportunities for youth to share a talent or hobby.
  • Recognition of good things youth have done.
  • Music practice.

Opening exercises should last 10 to 15 minutes.

  • Video: "How to Begin Mutual"

This short video shows how you can invite the Spirit as you begin Mutual and other activities (running time, 2:00). You will see how to involve youth and leaders, teach leadership, and cultivate friendships.

For leaders:

  • Who is present at opening exercises?
  • How are the youth involved?
  • How does involving youth in this setting help with retention and activation?
  • How are youth being prepared for future responsibilities?

"What can 15 minutes each week of well-prepared, spiritual involvement do for a youth over six years?"

—Elaine S. Dalton, second counselor, Young Women general presidency
