Gospel Doctrine teachers: The lessons in the manual contain more information than you will probably be able to teach in one class period. Seek the Spirit of the Lord in selecting the scripture accounts, questions, and other lesson materials that best meet the needs of class members.
Basic Resources
- To read the lesson or to see the class member study guide section for this week, click on the pictures above.
- You can read the assigned scriptures for this week online: Matthew 3–4; John 1:35–51.
- The teacher's manual also includes the following scripture passages as additional reading: JST, Matthew 3:35; JST, Matthew 4:1–2, 5–6, 8–9, 11; Mark 1:1–13; Luke 3:1–22; 4:1–14; John 1:19–34; 2:1–25; 2 Nephi 31.
- Would you like to listen to an audio recording of the scriptures in this week's lesson? Try listening to or downloading Matthew 3 (MP3 format), which is in this week's reading. For more New Testament audio, click here.
- The official scripture study aids often have helpful information you can use in your lessons. The lesson for this week refers to the following entries in the Bible Dictionary: "Baptism," "Holy Ghost," "John the Baptist," and "Repentance" (see lesson manual, pages 13, 15).
Art
The lesson manual lists several pictures from the Gospel Art Picture Kit that you can use during your lesson (see lesson manual, pages 13, 17). These pictures are available online or in your meetinghouse library. To see these pictures online, click on the picture titles in the list below.
For suggestions on using pictures in your class, read "Pictures" and "Visuals" in Teaching, No Greater Call, pages 176, 182–83.
Suggestions for Teaching
- The lesson for this week provides this suggestion for teaching: "Use class time wisely. Plan what you will discuss and how much time you want to spend on each part of the lesson, but then let the Spirit guide you. Do not end a meaningful discussion just so you can cover the entire lesson. It is more important for class members to learn and feel the Spirit than for every point in the lesson to be discussed" (lesson manual, page 13).
- The suggested attention activity for this lesson shows an image of the Hebrew word Messiah (see lesson manual, page 13). You can view this image online by accessing the original layout, or PDF version, of the lesson. The PDF version is available for all New Testament lessons.
