- Obtain from your predecessor, if possible, any files of published stories. These files can be a good source of ideas for new stories and also will show the kinds of items local media will publish. Ask about any local media database that may have been kept.
- Review local newspapers to see what types of stories the newspapers publish and what kind of prominence they give the stories. Take note of the religion section of the paper, if it has one. If not, look for church-related stories published elsewhere in the paper—often on Saturdays.
- Determine which local radio and TV stations carry local news or have locally produced talk shows or magazine-type programs that offer opportunities for coverage of the Church.
- Obtain a current listing of local Church leaders—stake presidencies, high councilors, stake auxiliary leaders, and bishops—and anyone who has been designated as a Church spokesperson. If you are a multistake DPA, you need the names and telephone numbers of the stake DPAs, stake presidents, and mission president(s) in the region.
