Visit the winter home of Brigham Young, one of the most famous pioneers in American history and the second prophet and president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. President Young spent the last winters of his life in the St. George area enjoying the warm weather and directing the building of the St. George Temple and Tabernacle.
Brigham Young was a man of great intelligence, loyalty, faith, and courage. Born of humble parents in a log cabin in Vermont, he was called to be the second prophet and president of the Church in December 1847. As leader of the Church, President Young led and directed thousands of pioneers across the United States in one of the most amazing journeys in American history. He also directed the establishment of more than 300 communities. He reinforced doctrine that the Prophet Joseph Smith had taught and in all ways continued the work that Joseph had begun.
President Young was also active in the community. He became governor of the provisional State of Deseret, later designated by Congress the territory of Utah. His contributions to Utah are immeasurable. He helped develop canals, railways, telegraphs, and theaters, and established industries, banks, and universities.
