In 1847, a small choir sang on what is now Temple Square. This marked the beginning of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

George Careless, appointed choir director in 1869, envisioned a choir large enough to match the size of the Tabernacle and the magnificence of the organ. Since then, the choir has grown to 360 members, who come from all walks of life and are unpaid volunteers. The choir has performed in numerous countries and has released more than 150 albums.

The Tabernacle Choir broadcasts Music and the Spoken Word, Sunday mornings in the Tabernacle and rehearses most Thursdays at 8:00 P.M. to 9:30 P.M. Broadcasts and rehearsals are open to the public. At rehearsals, you may come and go as needed. For broadcasts, you are requested to be in in your seat before 9:15 A.M.

Beginning Tuesday, 30 November 2004 rehearsals and broadcasts will be held in the Conference Center. The Choir does not rehearse or perform live on Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day, and will not be rehearsing or performing while they are on tour 16 June through 3 July 2005.
