You Know Liam’s Friends, But What About Yours?

Friends

The October centerspread (pages 24–25) teaches us about many different religions, and how we usually have a lot more in common that we think! But even though we know it’s important to share our beliefs with each other, it can be hard for kids (and parents) to navigate these conversations. This month, you might want to spend one family night learning together how you can better respect and understand those with different beliefs.

Start by reading the centerspread. Then talk about some “Dos” and “Don’ts” of interacting with those from other religions. For example, Do include them and ask respectful questions. Don’t leave them out, make fun of the way they dress, or call them names. Make it fun by having kids hold up paper signs with the words “Do” or “Don’t” written on them as you go through your list. Next, go over some respectful questions they could ask friends of different faiths. Some questions could include:

  • What do you like about your church?
  • What holidays do you celebrate?
  • Do you have any important traditions in your religion?
  • How do you practice your religion each day?

Share what you learned about your friends at your next family night!

More Than Bread and Water

Sacrament

Taking the sacrament can be the best part of your week, but young children may see it as just a boring sort of snack time. Help them understand that the sacrament is more than just bread and water; it’s about our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Here are some ideas to try:

  • Tell the story of the Last Supper using Luke 22:19–20, or watch “The Last Supper” at Biblevideos.org.
  • Try a simple explanation like this: “Jesus asked us to go to church and remember Him by taking the sacrament. We eat a small piece of bread and drink a small cup of water to remember how much Jesus loves us.”
  • On the way to church, help your children come up with ideas for what they can think about during the sacrament. Remind them of their favorite stories or Primary songs about Jesus.
  • During the sacrament, let your children look at illustrations of the Savior. These pictures can focus your child’s attention and make the stories of Jesus less abstract. Find pictures and stories of Jesus to use at lessonhelps.ChurchofJesusChrist.org. Look under the topic “Jesus Christ.”
