On the cover: Along the Mormon Trail in Wyoming, an “S” curve stretches into infinity, reaching across forbidding land towards the new Zion.

Insert: Bridger Butte west of Fort Bridger, the Saints’ first landmark after they left the Oregon Trail. During the “Utah War” of 1856–57, Brigham Young kept scouts on top of this formation to monitor the Federal troops wintering near Fort Bridger. Photography by Eldon K. Linschoten.
