Dark, ominous clouds shower a steady rain as pioneers struggle to ford swift waters in this scene depicting the journey west in 1847. Yet the pioneers went on with hope, not giving up on the dream to settle in Zion.

[illustration] Inside back: Joseph in Liberty Jail, by Liz Lemon Swindle, oil on canvas, 27″ x 36″, 1998. Languishing in the cold confines of the Liberty Jail in Missouri, the Prophet Joseph Smith called out in anguished prayer, “O God, where art thou?” (D&C 121:1). In response came these comforting words: “All these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good. … Fear not what man can do, for God shall be with you forever and ever” (D&C 122:7, 9).
