Parents' Role in Seminary

Parents and children reading the scriptures

The youth of the Church face difficult choices about how they will spend their time. Many students are involved in extracurricular activities that take place early in the morning or late in the evening, which can make it difficult to make time for seminary. One of the most important things parents and leaders can do is help their youth enroll in seminary.

Parents can use the mySeminary app to enroll their youth in seminary. They should follow the prompts to register their youth and then return to the app regularly to track attendance and credit progress and to view reading and make-up work information.

President Boyd K. Packer of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles taught: “Parents, encourage, even insist, that your students register for seminary or institute. Presidents, bishops, youth leaders, you are responsible to encourage every youngster, without exception, to enroll. Few things you do will benefit them quite as much” (“Agency and Control,” Ensign, May 1983, 67).

This website includes suggestions regarding ways that your youth can succeed in seminary. Click here to view additional prophetic quotes on the importance of seminary and institute.

Parents should also encourage their youth who are graduating from seminary to enroll in institute after high school. Continued religious education will help youth increase their commitment to Jesus Christ as they rely upon the influence and power of the Holy Ghost to make important life decisions. Visit the Institute of Religion website for additional information on this transition.
