Connecting gospel truths to your life and circumstances

As you study the scriptures, one way to personalize and apply what you are learning is to try and make connections to your own life and circumstances. For example, you might be struggling with a specific question or challenge. Searching for answers while you read the scriptures is an effective way to increase the relevance of your study.

Activity A

  1. Think of a current challenge or problem common in the world today that you find troubling. Briefly describe the challenge, then answer the following questions:

    • Are there any doctrinal mastery passages that you think address the problem? How would the world be different if most people applied the truths from your chosen passage? Share one or two specific examples.

    • Using the doctrine from your chosen passage, what might you say to someone who is facing this challenge?

Activity B

Think about your current circumstances, including any personal questions, challenges, or behaviors that you might be seeking help with. Review the list of doctrinal mastery passages, looking for truths that can help you with these questions, challenges, or behaviors. Choose at least one passage that might help you with something you are facing right now.

  1. Write which passage you chose, then answer the following questions without sharing anything too personal:

    • How can applying the doctrine from your chosen passage be a blessing to your life and circumstances?

    • How can applying the truths from that passage help you feel closer to Jesus Christ and become more like Him?

    • What are one or two small steps you can take to begin applying these truths to your life?
