2 Nephi 6–10

Overview

Nephi’s brother Jacob shared prophecies about our day and the gathering of Israel that can help us understand our role in the Lord’s latter-day work. He taught the Nephites about the conditions all mankind face because of the Fall of Adam and Eve. He declared that Jesus Christ delivers us from the effects of the Fall, and he warned against actions and attitudes that draw us away from Christ. He invited his people to come unto Christ and feast upon the blessings of the gospel.

Prepare to Teach

The following information provides teachers with ideas of what may need to be prepared in advance for each lesson.

2 Nephi 6; 10

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students feel a greater desire to participate with the Lord in the latter-day gathering of Israel.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to come prepared to share experiences they have had participating in the gathering of Israel.

  • Videos:Hope of Israel” (1:01:34; watch from time code 39:36 to 40:05 and from time code 40:29 to 43:38); “Families Gathering Families on Both Sides of the Veil” (3:22)

  • Image: A flag, ensign, or standard being raised

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: For the activity under “Make a plan to help the Lord gather Israel,” consider copying and pasting the resources in the chat feature so that students can access them quickly. It might also be helpful to give students a time limit to review the resources and a reminder when they have one minute left. This can help them conclude their studies and allow them time to form their plan and share it with the class.

2 Nephi 9:1–26

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students feel greater appreciation for Jesus Christ’s role in helping us overcome sin and death.

  • Student preparation: Consider inviting students to study 2 Nephi 9:1–26. They could mark in one way what would happen to us without the Atonement of Jesus Christ, and in a different way they could mark what can happen to us because of Jesus Christ and His Atonement.

  • Video:Why We Need a Savior” (2:15)

  • Content to display: The chart that indicates what life would be like with and without the Savior

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Consider using the whiteboard feature in your videoconferencing app. Allow the class to fill out each side of the chart as you study and learn together.

2 Nephi 9:27–49

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students avoid behaviors that lead to unhappiness and separate them from Jesus Christ.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to pay attention to which of their actions between now and the next class help them feel closer to God and which make them feel more distanced from Him.

  • Objects: An item, such as candy, that students would enjoy finding for the “hot or cold” game at the beginning of the lesson

  • Video:His Grace: Change Is Possible through Christ” (3:29)

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: As an alternative to the student preparation, invite students to come to class prepared to share examples of spiritually minded people they know. If possible, consider encouraging them to bring a picture of the person they chose and hold it up to the camera while they are sharing their thoughts.

2 Nephi 9:50–52

Lesson purpose: This lesson is intended to help students feel a greater desire to seek the blessings and satisfaction that only Jesus Christ can provide.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to think of choices they have made, places they have gone, or things they have learned that brought lasting satisfaction to their lives.

  • Objects: Cups filled with things that would not quench a person’s thirst, such as soy sauce, mustard, or liquefied caramel or chocolate. (You could also bring a few food items that would not satisfy hunger, such as salt or a small mint, and a more substantial food item like a piece of fruit.)

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Use breakout rooms and invite students to share with their groups one or more cross-references they found for 2 Nephi 9:50–52. Students could also work with their groups to find cross-references together.

Doctrinal Mastery Review 3

Lesson purpose: This lesson is intended to help increase students’ understanding and allow them to practice explaining the doctrine taught in some of the Book of Mormon doctrinal mastery passages.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to select one Book of Mormon doctrinal mastery passage that is meaningful to them and to prepare to share with the class why this passage is meaningful.

  • Objects: Any supplies your students may need in order to complete activity A, B, C, or D

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Consider helping students think of objects and tools from their homes that they can use to complete activity A, B, C, or D. Invite students to share their objects with the class.
