2 Nephi 11–19

Overview

Nephi loved the witnesses of his brother Jacob and of the prophet Isaiah so much that he recorded them along with his own witness of Jesus Christ. He said of Isaiah, “My soul delighteth in his words” (2 Nephi 11:2). Isaiah used symbolic language to describe the Lord’s power and holiness. He also prophesied of the Savior, listing several of His titles and attributes.

Prepare to Teach

The following information provides teachers with ideas of what may be needed to prepare in advance for each lesson.

2 Nephi 11

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help strengthen students’ testimony of the reality of Jesus Christ.

2 Nephi 12–15

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students understand Isaiah’s symbolic prophecies and ponder how these prophecies can help them in their lives.

  • Student preparation: Point out to students that Nephi wrote many chapters of Isaiah’s prophecies into his own record and that Isaiah used a lot of symbolism. Read 2 Nephi 12:1–3 or 2 Nephi 14:5–6 and ponder what these verses might mean.

  • Content to display: On one side of the board, a drawing of a mountain, labeled with the reference 2 Nephi 12:1–3; on the other side of the board, a drawing of a cloud and a pillar of fire, labeled with the reference 2 Nephi 14:5–6

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: As students study the symbolism of the mountain, the cloud, and the pillar of fire, you or a student could illustrate these symbols using the whiteboard tool. As students discuss what these symbols mean, notes could be added near the illustration.

2 Nephi 16

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students recognize the Lord’s ability to forgive and cleanse them.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to ponder the following question: What does a loving God want us to understand when we feel we are not good enough?

  • Images to display: Several images of the Savior appearing to people on earth

2 Nephi 17–19

Lesson purpose: This lesson is intended to help students trust Jesus Christ through studying His attributes and titles.

  • Student preparation: In their daily scripture study, invite students to identify any titles of the Savior and to ponder what those titles might mean and how they might help them trust in and love the Savior more.

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: To help students understand the context of these chapters, consider inviting some of them to represent King Ahaz of Judah; his son, King Hezekiah; King Rezin of Syria; King Pekah of Israel; and the king of Assyria. Students could prepare name tags before class or change their profile name temporarily to the person they are representing. Consider inviting the student representing King Ahaz to read the Lord’s words to him in 2 Nephi 17:3–4, 7 and the student representing King Hezekiah to read 2 Nephi 18:11–13, 17.

Doctrinal Mastery Review 4

Lesson purpose: This lesson is intended to help students apply the doctrine taught in various Book of Mormon doctrinal mastery passages.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to prepare to share a favorite scripture passage and tell why it is one of their favorites. You could ask them to include how it applies to their lives. It may be helpful to ask a few students to come prepared to share.
